Frequently Asked Questions – E-Waste Recycling in Sydney

eWaste Sydney answers common questions about business e-waste recycling, secure data destruction, IT asset disposal, Blancco data erasure, certifications, asset reporting, collections and responsible recycling across Sydney and Australia.

E-Waste Recycling

What is e-waste?

E-waste is discarded electrical and electronic equipment such as computers, laptops, monitors, mobile phones, servers, networking equipment, printers and other electronic devices that are no longer required.

Why is e-waste recycling important?

Responsible e-waste recycling helps recover reusable materials, reduce unnecessary landfill, manage potentially hazardous components and support a more circular approach to electronic equipment.

What types of electronics can eWaste Sydney recycle?

We accept a wide range of business IT and electronic equipment including computers, laptops, monitors, mobile phones, servers, printers, networking equipment, hard drives, SSDs and selected electronic medical equipment.

We do not generally accept household whitegoods such as microwaves, ovens or toasters.

What happens to reusable computers and IT equipment?

Where practical, equipment is assessed for reuse, refurbishment or value recovery before material recycling. This reuse-first approach helps extend the useful life of equipment and reduce unnecessary waste.

What happens to equipment that cannot be reused?

Equipment that cannot be reused is processed through responsible recycling channels so reusable materials can be recovered and waste to landfill can be minimised wherever practical.

Business E-Waste Collections

Does eWaste Sydney offer free e-waste pickup?

Free collection may be available for eligible business locations, equipment types and quantities. Collection or recycling fees may apply depending on the location, access conditions, required service and volume of equipment.

Contact us with your equipment list and collection location and we can confirm whether your collection qualifies.

Do you collect from residential homes?

No. eWaste Sydney specialises in commercial e-waste recycling for businesses, government organisations, schools, healthcare providers and other commercial organisations.

Residential customers should contact their local council for household e-waste disposal options.

Can you collect e-waste from multiple locations?

Yes. Multi-site collection programs can be arranged for organisations with offices, schools, healthcare facilities or other locations across Sydney and other Australian regions.

Do you provide e-waste recycling outside Sydney?

Yes. Although our main facility is located in Sydney, eWaste Sydney can arrange business e-waste collection and IT asset disposal services across Australia depending on the location, equipment volume and project requirements.

Secure Data Destruction

How does eWaste Sydney securely destroy data?

For suitable working storage devices, eWaste Sydney uses secure software-based data sanitisation. Where media is damaged, inaccessible or cannot be successfully erased, physical destruction or other approved destruction methods can be arranged.

Do you use Blancco for data erasure?

Yes. eWaste Sydney uses Blancco Drive Eraser for secure software-based data sanitisation of suitable storage devices such as hard drives and SSDs.

Blancco erasure reports can be provided as part of the agreed service and can assist with audit and compliance records.

Learn more about our Secure Data Destruction services.

Do your data destruction services align with NIST SP 800-88?

Yes. Data sanitisation services can be performed in alignment with NIST SP 800-88 Guidelines for Media Sanitization, depending on the storage media, its condition and the security requirements of the project.

What happens if a hard drive or SSD cannot be securely erased?

If a storage device is faulty, damaged, inaccessible or cannot be successfully sanitised using software, physical destruction, shredding, degaussing or another suitable destruction method can be arranged depending on the media and project requirements.

Do you provide a Certificate of Data Destruction?

Yes. Where secure data destruction is included in the service, eWaste Sydney can provide a Certificate of Data Destruction together with supporting device and drive information where applicable.

Are you a certified e-waste recycler?

Yes. eWaste Sydney is certified to AS/NZS 5377:2013 for the responsible collection, storage, transport and treatment of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment.

Yes. eWaste Sydney can provide asset audit reports containing information such as manufacturer, model, serial number, asset tag, specifications and storage drive serial number depending on the project requirements.

Learn more about our Asset Audit Reporting service.

Why is asset reporting important?

Asset reporting gives organisations a documented record of the equipment collected and processed. It can support internal asset registers, compliance requirements, audit records and data destruction documentation.

IT Asset Recovery & Buyback

Do you offer IT asset buyback or rebates?

Yes. Working IT equipment with residual value can be assessed for reuse, refurbishment or asset recovery. Where appropriate, a buyback or rebate may be offered based on the equipment type, specification, age, condition and market value.

Can equipment be reused instead of recycled?

Yes. Where equipment is suitable, reuse and refurbishment are prioritised before material recycling. This helps extend equipment life and supports circular-economy outcomes.

Do you recycle servers and data centre equipment?

Yes. eWaste Sydney provides server recycling, IT asset disposal and data centre decommissioning services including equipment removal, asset reporting, secure data destruction, recycling and value recovery.
